Ulu Hou High School Program
Ulu Hou is designed to cultivate leadership and entrepreneurship among high school students through cultural and place-based learning. Now in its third year, the program is made possible through Kamehameha Schools and serves five high schools across Hawaiʻi Island: Keaʻau, Kaʻū, Honokaʻa, Hilo, and Kohala. Kahua Paʻa Mua (KPM) partners specifically with Kohala High School to deliver this impactful experience.
At the heart of Ulu Hou is a commitment to connecting students with their roots. By working alongside kūpuna (elders), students gain a deeper understanding of their own wahi pana (sacred place). This intergenerational exchange creates a strong sense of identity, responsibility, and stewardship for the land and community.
Through hands-on learning, Ulu Hou equips students with entrepreneurial and leadership skills, preparing them to navigate both modern challenges and traditional values. As Executive Director David Fuertes shares, "Knowing where you come from is so important, and we want to preserve that. So we have included kūpuna to be a part of that project."
By bridging culture with forward-thinking leadership, Ulu Hou empowers students to build a future that honors their past while shaping their own path ahead.
