Educational Programs for Agriculture
Ulu Mau: Youth Summer Program
Ulu Mau is a one-month summer program designed to educate and inspire youth, starting from age nine, by connecting them to Hawaiian history, agriculture, and the legacy of Kamehameha. Made possible through Kamehameha Schools, this program is rooted in the rich history of Kohala, where students gain a deeper understanding of their ancestral knowledge and its relevance today.
Through hands-on activities, students explore the agricultural practices that sustained Kamehameha’s people, emphasizing the critical role of food production in building strong communities. As Executive Director David Fuertes explains, "Kamehameha built his warriors not only through exercising, but by building food supply."
A key component of Ulu Mau is the opportunity for students to take field trips across the island, visiting culturally significant sites that deepen their understanding of Hawai‘i’s history and connection to the land.
By blending cultural education with practical agricultural skills, Ulu Mau instills a sense of responsibility and connection to the land, empowering the next generation to carry forward the wisdom and resilience of their ancestors.
