David Fuertes Featured in “This is Kohala” on PBS Hawaiʻi
On March 28 at 8:30 p.m., PBS Hawai‘i premiered “This is Kohala”, a documentary that captures the history, culture, and people of Kohala through the voices of those who have lived it. Among the featured storytellers is David Fuertes, a lifelong advocate for agriculture, education, and community resilience.
David’s presence in this documentary reflects his decades of dedication to empowering Kohala’s people, particularly through sustainable farming and youth mentorship. His work through Kahua Paʻa Mua has helped families reconnect with the ʻāina, learn agricultural skills, and build self-sufficiency. As a respected leader, educator, and farmer, David continues to embody the values of aloha, kuleana, and mālama that make Kohala so special.
Sharing Kohala’s Story Through Community Voices
“This is Kohala” is not just about one person—it is about the collective wisdom, perseverance, and aloha that define this place. Alongside David Fuertes, the film includes powerful insights from other historians, cultural practitioners, musicians, and leaders who have shaped Kohala’s identity.
The documentary will also honor the late Fred Cachola, another champion of Kohala’s history and legacy. By bringing these voices together, “This is Kohala” paints a rich and deeply personal picture of a community that remains rooted in tradition while looking toward the future.
