Kohala Middle School Students Visit Kahua Paʻa Mua: A Day of Learning, Growth, and Connection
In 2023, Kohala Middle School sixth graders spent a day at Kahua Paʻa Mua farm, immersing themselves in hands-on learning about farming, sustainability, and Hawaiian culture. The visit provided students with an opportunity to experience the daily life of a farmer, offering valuable lessons that extended beyond the classroom.
Learning Through Experience: Farming and Sustainability
During their visit, students engaged in natural farming practices, gaining insight into how food is cultivated in a way that honors the land. Through hands-on activities, they explored animal husbandry, soil health, and responsible land stewardship, learning how these elements work together to create a thriving farm ecosystem.
By actively participating in these processes, the students gained a deeper appreciation for the importance of food sovereignty and the role that farming plays in supporting local communities. This experience also helped them understand the value of sustainability and self-sufficiency—essential knowledge for the future of Hawaiʻi.
Connecting to Culture Through ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi
Beyond agriculture, the visit also provided a meaningful opportunity for students to learn ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi (Hawaiian language).. Focusing on words related to ʻāina (land) and farming, they strengthened their connection to their culture while reinforcing the importance of traditional knowledge in modern sustainability practices.
Wisdom from Uncle David: Four Key Lessons for Life
One of the most impactful moments of the day was hearing from Uncle David Fuertes, who shared four fundamental lessons with the students:
1️⃣ Know your origin – Understanding where you come from allows you to honor your ancestors and their legacy.
2️⃣ Know your values – Your values should guide your decisions, helping you navigate life with integrity.
3️⃣ Know your purpose – Knowing the why behind your actions ensures that everything you do has meaning and direction.
4️⃣ Envision your destiny – Set your sights on what is best for both yourself and your community, and work toward that vision with intention.
Cultivating a New Generation of Stewards
By planting seeds of knowledge and inspiring the next generation to care for the land, Kahua Paʻa Mua strives to shape future leaders who understand the importance of sustainability, cultural identity, and community resilience.
