Building on the Vision: A Community Conversation on Water

Following the success of the Kohala Agricultural Visioning event, the community came together once again for the Kohala Water Summit on August 1, 2024, at Hisaoka Gym, Kamehameha Park. This summit provided a space for discussions on one of Hawaiʻi's most vital resources—water.

Hosted with the support of County of Hawaiʻi R&D Department, Vibrant Hawaiʻi, KCDP Agriculture Group, and the Kohala Community, the event focused on understanding, protecting, and planning for the sustainable use of Kohala’s water resources.

Panel Discussions & Community Engagement

Attendees had the opportunity to learn about Kohala’s water resources through three expert-led panel discussions. Representatives from key water management organizations shared their knowledge and perspectives, helping the community navigate the complexities of local water use, conservation, and future planning.

Organizations that contributed their expertise included:

  • Department of Water Supply

  • Kamehameha Schools

  • State Commission on Water Resource Management

  • Waimea Water Services

  • Kohala Ditch Company

  • State Department of Agriculture

  • Hoʻōkipa Ranch

  • Natural Resources Conservation Service - USDA

  • ʻIole

Candidate Forum for District 9

In addition to panel discussions, the event featured a Candidate Forum for District 9, where community members engaged with candidates on their perspectives and plans for water resource management. This provided a valuable opportunity for voters to hear firsthand about policies and initiatives that could shape Kohala’s water future.

Why This Matters

Water is essential to Kohala’s agriculture, environment, and community well-being. The Kohala Water Summit built on the conversations started at the Agricultural Visioning event, ensuring that water management remains a community-driven effort. By bringing together experts, policymakers, and residents, the event created collaboration and informed decision-making for a more sustainable future.

Mahalo to Our Sponsors and Participants

A heartfelt mahalo to County of Hawaiʻi R&D Department, Vibrant Hawaiʻi, KCDP Agriculture Group, and the Kohala Community for making this event possible. Special thanks to all panelists, candidates, and attendees who contributed their time, knowledge, and voices to this important conversation.

By working together, we continue to honor our kuleana to the land, ensuring that Kohala’s water resources remain protected for generations to come. Stay engaged, stay informed, and let’s keep the conversation going.
